Summer Vacation is Finally Here Print E-mail
Written by MITCHELL STEINFELD
For students all over the valley it is finally summer. Time to relax, have fun, sleep in, keep cool, and most importantly not think about school… well, maybe not.  As teens start getting out of school they still have a tremendous workload. The only plus summer seems to bring is the lack of due dates and the ability to work at a more leisurely pace.

As kids leave the highly structured world of teachers and bell schedules we start more personalized expeditions, the goal of course being acceptance into college, with strict relaxation seemingly a distance second. With all the freedom summer offers there is the opportunity to get ahead and gain distinction and most teenagers, especially those finishing their junior years of high school, seem to be coupling vacations with many taxing activities.

Students planning on beefing up there school schedules by taking Advanced Placement classes never seem to be able to hide from homework and summer is no exception. Every AP class (at Granada at least) requires students to complete large summer assignments. Some students find themselves literally having to read more books than they did in school the previous year. Summer barely gives a break for testing either as students find themselves studying for tests that are promised for the first day of class.

Summer is definitely a time for getting ahead. With college applications and SAT tests looming early in the school year teens use their time writing essays and answering practice problems in order to make themselves more appealing college candidates.

It seems that with the absence of mandatory work students are using their time now to work at being prepared for not only the upcoming year but what lies after it too.
